Channel 4 insiders say he grew grouchy and desperate for his weed before leaving midway through.
A source said: “Chris was a great signing and really interesting figure, but he was very restless and irritable. It just became apparent that he couldn’t cope and wanted out. Not being able to smoke his cannabis seemed to be a big issue.
“He made it very clear to other people on the show that he wanted to smoke and felt he should be allowed to, but obviously taking illegal drugs on a mainstream TV show just isn’t going to happen.”
Eubank, 56, has regularly spoken of his fondness for smoking spliffs in social media videos.
Channel 4 insisted he had left the series voluntarily. The broadcaster added: “It’s untrue to suggest that anyone was asked to leave the set of Scared of the Dark because they were smoking.
“Smoking was strictly prohibited and there were alarms throughout the building. The celebrities remained inside the bunker for the duration of their stay, being filmed for 24 hours a day, by over 50 cameras.”
The five-part series, hosted by ex-EastEnder Danny Dyer, will be shown from April 16.
Announcing the show, Dyer said: “You’re gonna laugh, you’re gonna laugh some more and I promise you’re gonna love it.”
Eubank won the world middleweight and super-middleweight titles in a career from 1985 to 1998.
Famed for his smart outfits, he has appeared on 2015’s I’m A Celeb.
Son Chris Jnr is a boxer and Eubank Snr would wear a sheriff badge at fights to “protect and serve” him.
